With Trent’s parents killed by Microsol as well as one of his best friends just before the events of the game – something the game doesn’t go out of its way to tell you, by the way – not to mention a bounty on his head, Trent has few places he can go where he’ll be safe. Microsol want him out of the picture forever, likely because he’s one of the few people that can stop their plans for galactic domination taking shape. Since Microsol have gone out of their way to make us their enemy, the only people we have left to turn to are the ones standing against them, powerful forces in their own right but nowhere near on the same level as Microsol. They’re going to need all the help they can get and fortunately, Trent is the best at what he does: shooting things with pew pews in his space fighter. But is that going to be enough?

The story of Tyrian 2000 moves at a very brisk pace and is, in many ways, utterly forgettable and unimportant. The arcade mode eschews it entirely and nothing is lost from the experience in doing so, even though a lot of effort was put into parts of it. I quite like the story, even though it does quickly veer off into the realms of absurdity when you get past the first three episodes which made up the original game. Tyrian 2000 added a lot more pieces of story that you can pick up in the data cubes alongside the original plot and though some of them are serious additions to the lore of the setting, a lot of them are very puzzling and silly indeed. 

It’s safe to say that many of the editions added in Tyrian 2000 are somewhat out of place compared to the original game, but none of them detract from the enjoyment of the game as a whole. The action is still frantic, the music still awesome and the zappy pew pews still very zappy and full of pew pew. As the game goes on we’ll see more of the additions that were added later but for now, we’ve still got a lot of the original game to go.
