An investigation by a British newspaper and the British Medical Journal has exposed flaws in the European Union's scheme for regulating medical implants. Posing as representatives of a fictitious Chinese company, reporters from The Daily Telegraph applied for approval from the representative of an EU notified body for a fake and potentially dangerous hip implant. The journalists were told how foreign manufacturers could change the country of origin of implants to gain access to the EU market. The implant later received provisional approval raising questions about other medical implants such as breast implants and cardiac defibrillators.
