"Tiny nanorobots have begun converting the entire surface of the planet into a giant, neural net supercomputer":

Well, there you have it, folks. One day nanotechnology will transform entire planets into computers with superhuman intelligence. But really, can a mind be contained in a brain built out of silicon computer chips? The false dawn of AI made a lot of people think it's not possible, but those efforts were mostly based on symbolic learning algorithms and limited within the PAC learning framework.

The AIXI framework (http://www.hutter1.net/ai/aixigentle.htm) allows for sub-symbolic algorithms such as neural nets, and seems to solve the general intelligence problem. All we lack is the computing power. Will DISC grids (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~bryant/pubdir/cmu-cs-07-128.pdf) be the technology that will bridge the gap and ultimately bring about the singularity? Will we survive it as a race? Or will we perish and give way to our silicon-based children, as is the natural cycle of life?

In any case, if the engineering of consciousness is not psychedelic, then I don't know what is.
