Here's how I recently cleaned a sponge filter in a discus tank during some normal maintenance. FISH ROOM UPDATE on a Friday!

Always doing some sort of maintenance in the fish room. Always have to care for these tropical wet pets! Here's how I make cleaning a sponge filter a little easier. Since using chlorinated tap water might end up destroying some/all of the beneficial bacteria that has colonized, using old aquarium water is the way to go. But, filling buckets over and over is a huge pain. For any tank in my fish room that is sitting higher than the sink/faucet I can let gravity do the work for me. I get a siphon started using my "python" faucet attachment. Once its going, I turn off the faucet and the aquarium water continues draining at the sink. Then I simply rinse out the sponge there! Its what needs to be done for proper filtration and the long term care of the animals.
