United Nations, New York, 11 June 2009 - The United Nations Humanitarian Chief John Holmes has told reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York that the organisation along with international NGOs have averted another humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

Speaking about his presentation to the Security Council this morning, Mr Holmes said he had tabled a mix report about events taking place in Sudan.

The Humanitarian Chief says progress has been made by international agencies and NGOs in filling critical life-saving gaps in the country's war-torn region of Darfur. And according to him - at least for now - another humantarian crisis has been averted.

However Mr. Holmes warned that with the rainy season imminent and the hunger-gap season also beginning, the emergence of a new humanitarian crisis cannot be ruled out.
