A bronze eagle stolen from the Korean-Vietnam War Memorial at Wyandotte County Lake was found Thursday morning. Unified Government officials said a Union Pacific Railroad employee spotted the eagle near an underpass at Adams Street and Shawnee Avenue at about 6:30 a.m. "All I could see was the back side of the wings," said Keith Harris, who found the missing statue. Harris said he put the statue into his trunk. He said he had no idea that the eagle belonged to the war memorial or that it had been stolen, but his coworkers figured it out. "I thought, 'Oh great. Now I'm going to jail for picking up a bird,'" Harris told KMBC's Martin Augustine. The 200-pound bronze eagle was taken from the war memorial on March 20. The eagle is valued at $5,000. "I can't imagine what would make a person want to mess with something like that," Harris said. "Somebody did this either as a joke, or for money, for a prank. Either way, their core values are messed up." Police said there were no fingerprints found on the statue. Investigators said they suspect the statue was stolen for scrap metal. Augustine reported that the eagle had survived a tornado in May 2003. The twister tore apart much of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, but the storm blew over the top of the statue, which never budged from its spot.
