Supporters of missing Saudi writer demand news of his fate in Istanbul

(8 Oct 2018) A friend of prominent Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, who went missing in Istanbul said Monday that "we know in a way that he has most likely been killed" from unofficial conversations with officials. At a protest Monday outside the Saudi consulate, Mohamed Okad, friend of Khashoggi and founder of Insight into Crisis, a conflict advisory, demanded his immediate release if alive, "and if not, we would like to know exactly what happened to him and the details of what happened." Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi journalist who disappeared last week after a visit to his country's consulate in Turkey, was once a Saudi insider. A close aide to the kingdom's former spy chief, he had been a leading voice in the country's prominent dailies, including the main English newspapers. Now the 59-year-old journalist and contributor to The Washington Post is feared dead, and Turkish authorities believe he was slain inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, something Saudi officials vehemently deny. Before his disappearance, Khoshaggi had been living since last year in the US in self-imposed exile, after he fled the kingdom amid a crackdown on intellectuals and activists who criticised policies of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.
