The Congress regularly observed January 26 as the Independence Day of India - commemorating the sacrifices of Indians during the struggle. In 1947, the British agreed to transfer power and political independence to India, and August 15 became the official Independence Day. However, the new Constitution of India, as drafted and approved by the Constituent Assembly of India, was mandated to take effect on January 26, 1950, to commemorate the 1930 declaration. On that day in 1950, India became a republic.

The younger element within the Congress led by leaders like Subhash Chandra Bose forced the Congress Party to adopt the resolution for complete independence. Gandhi had earlier demanded Dominion Status but didn't make any secret of the fact that he was happy to accept constitutional change. Gandhi had launched the Salt Satyagrah because political terrorism and leftist politics were gaining strength. Many leftists argue that Gandhi had launched the satyagrah to undo the work of the revolutionaries. But it is a well known fact that although the salt satyagrah was a popular movement the Lahore Conspiracy trial of Bhagat Singh, Raj Guru and Sukdev received country-wide attention. In many parts of India Bhagat Singh the Punjabi anarchist was as well known as the Mahatma himself. It was in this atmosphere that the Congress passed the resolution for complete independence. The very same people who joined the salt satyagrah would later shout: "Down with Gandhi, your truce with Lord Irwin has sent Bhagat Singh to the gallows." This clearly shows that although Gandhi hung on to his leadership, the Congress was divided and it would never be the same again. The only public leader of importance who praised Bhagat Singh was Subhas Chandra Bose. He urged the Sikh community to produce more Bhagat Singh's for the cause of the country.
