Mary Newsom is a recovering newspaper journalist who spent decades working at daily newspapers until leaving in 2011 to work at the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute as associate director of urban and regional affairs, where she manages the institute’s online publications. During her time at The Charlotte Observer she was projects and investigations editor and then spent more than 15 years as an editorial board member, op-ed columnist and blogger, building an expertise in city and regional growth issues, including environmental topics. She won multiple awards for her writing.

Mary is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill’s journalism school, and in 2007-08 spent a year as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard. She has also written for, among others, The AtlanticCities.com, Grist.com, and NextCity.org and Planning magazine.
