Fantasy Football Minute: Sizing up Josh Gordon and his impact with the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots grasped at straws long enough and seized an opportunity to make a low-risk trade with the Cleveland Browns for talented but troubled wideout Josh Gordon. Cleveland was set to release Gordon late last week after a rocky six-year relationship, but instead found a trade market for his services and ultimately sent him to New England for a conditional fifth-round pick.

The landing spot couldn’t be more perfect for Gordon and for fantasy owners who have waited patiently for him to get back to his elite form. Suspensions, personal problems and substance issues have derailed Gordon’s career, but his 2013 season showcased his rare, jaw-dropping talent. He caught 87 passes for 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns in 14 games that season. 

The Patriots have no such weapons on their roster, and they still have two weeks before Julian Edelman returns from a four-game NFL suspension. If coach Bill Belichick can keep Gordon focused and hungry, the potential rewards are off the charts. But that remains a big if, even for a coach who routinely makes such gambles.
