European polar explorers are planning a new research ship geared for thick pack ice and stormy seas - the Aurora Borealis. The project is taking place under the leadership of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven. While builders are aiming for a completion date of 2014,a model of this incredible ship -- which will be able to drill down 1000 meters into the ocean floor -- is open for viewing in the Hamburg Ship Model Basin.
