Young composer Max Lesser is a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Composer Fellowship Program's Class of 2015. The assignment given to these young composers was inspired by Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, the musical journal of his time in America. To mirror Dvořák’s rich exercise, the Fellows were asked to discover their own “new worlds” in neighborhoods they had not yet explored in Los Angeles and respond to them physically, intellectually and emotionally through new musical compositions. Max's piece is based on Skid Row in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Composer Fellowship Program bridges the gap between exceptional high school-aged composers and the greatest composers of today. A unique offering among American orchestras, this innovative, multi-year program offers passionate high school composers an extremely high level of consistent, intense focus on the process and production of music composition, giving them the tools and freedom to shape the future of concert music.
