On February 10, 1942, the former French liner Normandie capsized in New York Harbor a day after it caught fire while being refitted for the U.S. Navy. See newsreel footage of the liner on fire. Lying at her pier in New York the Normandie burns furiously, firemen from all over Manhattan fought the blaze. The liner was in the process of being converted to a troopship when the tragedy happened.
