This is a permanent magnet dc motor exposed. I took apart a 12v dc motor and used just the armature for the display. The reason for this was to explore different types of field magnets (permanent and electro). The project started with a guest to build a "series wound dc motor" but has evolved into something else. Lets see where this goes.
