Here's a very brief aircheck from the Adult Contemporary format days of KFOX-FM in 1982. According to the L. A. Times archives, KFOX was started in 1978, though this station can be seen in the original 1974 version of Gone in 60 Seconds.

What you'll briefly hear is 'The Captain' and a little piece of Redondo Beach history as the station celebrated the city's 75th anniversary. WARNING: This tape is worse for wear and one channel leans to one side, but it's a small piece of history...whatever that history might be.

The station would continue it's AC format days until the mid to late 80's when it went to block/pay programming and, in the early 90's, a chunk of their broadcasting went to Korean language.

Thanks to my friend, MarkTime, for recording it and recently sharing with me.

P. S.:I just got a message from MarkTime with a small update: "Either April 7th or 14th of 1982. Flew down for a couple days on Pacific Express, which somehow stayed in business long enough to fly me back to San Francisco." Thanks again, Mark!!

PPS: Here's a correction submitted by K. M. Richards two months ago:

"The apparent confusion over KFOX being in the 1974 movie and the Times' archives saying they started in 1978 is due to there having been two different KFOX's, at different points of time.

The KFOX in the movie was 1280 KFOX, on AM. They did have a KFOX-FM, but it became K-100 (KIQQ) in 1972.

The KFOX in this aircheck started off as KAPP in 1960, then became KKOP when owned by game-show host Jack Barry, and then changed call letters to KFOX in 1978."

Thank you KM!
