The main attraction at Carcassonne is the incredible Old Town inside the fortified wall, but there is also an attractive "new town" to enjoy -- it is not that new, since many of the buildings were constructed 300 years ago. The main square and pedestrian mall are very pleasant and offer a nice diversion from your main explorations inside the Carcassonne fortress.
