(3 Dec 2018) US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis welcomed Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to the Pentagon on Monday. Before the minister arrived, Mattis was asked by reporters if the pending deal India made with Russia for S-400 air defence systems was going to get a national security waiver under the CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions Act). While Mattis did not directly answer the question, he said, "We have a growing strategic confluence of interests with our country and theirs," and that topic was included in many matters that were going to be discussed. Mattis also said he had not yet signed a presidential request to extend the deployment of the 4,000 troops at the US southwest border. Sitharaman described earlier talks between the two countries as "very positive and productive," and she welcomed the opportunity to continue the "dialogue and partnership between our two countries".
