Symmetric and antisymmetric tensors are common players in physics using tensors. Since a space-time number is a rank 0 tensor, it will not have either covariant or contravariant indices. The product of two or more space-time numbers can always be split into a symmetric and antisymmetric part using non-associative operators, the antisymmetric operator being the familiar cross product.
