http://www.houstonzoo.org The chimpanzees at the Houston Zoo get special treats through a 'termite mound'. In the 1960's, Dr. Jane Goodall observed and reported on chimpanzees making tools. It was always believed that only humans made tools. Chimpanzees were fashioning sticks from branches and sticking them down into termite mounds. Defending termites biting the stick would be drawn out and eaten by the chimpanzees. Here at Houston Zoo, we don't use termites; we use various fruits, vegetables, grains, and condiments to give our chimps a diverse menu that changes daily.
