This 1960s color film about Portugal is one of a series of Pan Am New Horizons travelogues. The film opens with scenes of Lisbon, the capital (:25). A toddler chases pigeons in the square (:50). Flower sellers have colorful displays (1:08-1:18).  Hieronymites Monastery was begun in 1502 (1:29-1:40).  The Monument of the Discoveries was built for the 1940 World Exhibition (1:48). A Pan American Jet Clipper arrives and the crew and passengers disembark (1:50-2:12). People dine at outdoor cafes and window shop (2:16-2:35). Bullfights are popular at the Campo Pequeno Lisbon bullring (2:38-3:10). Neon lights beckon visitors to nightclubs. (3:11-3:25). Traditional dancers perform (3:26-3:45) at a dinner show. The 25 deAbril is a suspension bridge, from which the Christ the King monument can be seen (3:47-4:02). The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 (4:03-4:36). People walk with large baskets balanced on their heads (4:42-4:49). Portugal dos Pequenitos is a miniature village (4:50-5:05). The rolling waves of the ocean crash on the beach (5:12-5:30). Fishermen repair nets (5:31-5:53). A woman carries a large cloth bundle on her head (5:55). They bring back many different kinds of fish to sell at the market (6:00-6:39). A men herds black goats (6:40). A windmill spins outside, turning the gears to grind flour inside (6:54-7:30). The ruins of the walled city of Obidos remain (7:33-8:00). The second largest city in Portugal is Porto (8:16). Women wash their clothes along the water’s edge (8:23). Names of wineries are written on the rooftops of buildings (8:45-8:52). Wine is officially tasted by government experts and professional tasters ( 9:00-9:14). Wines are fortified with vintage brandy, shown in bottles and marked with the date (9:16-9:29). The process of a cooper making a wine barrel is shown (9:30-10:00). Rock formations in the ocean are shown (10:27-10:36). Estoril has many upscale resorts (10:40-11:08). The Estoril Casino is the largest in Europe. Roulette and craps are shown (11:10-11:27). Faro is the capital of the Algarve province in southern Portugal. The architecture has a strong Moor influence (11:48-12:07). Golf is popular (12:39-12:54). An elaborate lobster meal and wine is served to an outside table overlooking the ocean (12:55-13:10). Women in bikinis sunbathe while other play beach volleyball and waterski (13:18-13:37).
