Greetings Citizens of The Bahamas!

The new value-added tax measures have passed in the House of Assembly and Bahamians now face a 60% tax hike in the coming months.

Despite the measures passing by a majority of votes in the House, there were four Members of the ruling FNM party who voted against it. Concerns cited by these Honourable Members of Parliament were based on heeding the cries of their constituents against the tax hike. Without a doubt, these men should be applauded outright for listening to and acting on behalf of the Bahamian citizens that they serve.

Their stand was not without controversy, however, as two of those four who also served as Parliamentary Secretaries were fired from their government positions a day later for not following an absolute support policy written in the MANUAL OF CABINET AND MINISTRY PROCEDURE. As these two individuals were voted in as Members of Parliament, they still will be able to serve their constituents, but their additional Parliamentary Secretary responsibilities and privileges, unfortunately, have been stripped away from them.

The lesson to be taken from this entire exercise is that the present FNM administration appears more than prepared to forge forward in mandating their own party’s decisions at the literal expense of the Bahamian citizens who handed them the reins of power. A glaring lack of consultation from financial experts across this nation, as well as instances of numerous groups lobbying for other options to be brought to the table for discussion, made absolutely no difference.

The FNM administration was determined to disregard the collective voice of the Bahamian people.

The present government needs to be reminded that merely saying that they are doing what is best for the nation does not make it necessarily so, especially when the majority of the citizens of the nation openly are saying otherwise.
