The most important things I think you need to learn in the beginning stages are the basics such as the Intervals, Chords and Scales. I want to encourage you to watch the video that I put the link below which applies the idea of intervals directly to the guitar neck. I'll show you at least the basics of the half and whole steps. I also have a blog post to a little more information on that.

Intervals - What Are They?

An interval is the distance between notes. We have formed names for this such as half step and whole step. It is necessary to understand the names and the distances between notes. We can also use these names in making scales and chords. It is valuable to get used to hearing the distance and be able to identify it.

Intervals Make Scales

A scale is a series of notes. The series of notes depends on the intervals between each of the notes. The series have different sounds. A major scale is a whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step. A minor scale is a different pattern. These scales are the building blocks of playing melody, of making chords and of playing improvisation.

Chords Are Intervals Too

Chords are series of notes. They are on top of each other played at the same time. We call this a major chord if the interval between the first and the second note is two steps and then the second to the third is one and a half step. There are patterns for all types of chords. They are the minor chords, diminished chords and augmented chords. It is an extended chord when you add notes on top of that. These were all determined by the intervals between notes.
