This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. It will suffice to say that racism is a major problem internationally. To this, many people prescribe educating people as a whole; Shannon Chou says the first step towards fighting racism starts with ourselves. Instead of instructing others to revise their views, its time we embraced the fact that its WE who have to change, whether its through an increase in cultural pride, or a decrease in assumptions. We can be a better society simply by stopping the racist labels and being proud of our roots. Shannon Chou is a junior at Whitney High School. She has an ardent passion for reading and writing which makes her a bit of an English nerd. An avid fangirl of just about anything, Shannon's love of pop culture fuels her frequent debates with others, thus sharpening her speaking skills despite her very real case of stage fright. Shannon is honored to be a speaker for the TEDx event, which she looks forward to with great excitement. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
