In this lecture/discussion video from my Spring 2014 Religion in America class at Marist college, we explore the themes discussed in the textbook for the class (America's Religions: From Their Origins to the Twenty-first Century 3rd. ed., by Peter Williams), focusing on Chapter 32, "Protestant Liberalism and the Social Gospel."

In this chapter, we look at some of the main characteristics and causes of "Liberalism" or "Modernism" in late 19th century and early 20th century Protestantism in America, focusing particularly on biblical criticism, evolution, and the focus on continuity and progress.  We then turn to discussing the conception and movement around the "Social Gospel", an understanding of the requirements of Christianity that focused on social transformation, aimed at long-term betterment of the condition of the poor.
