This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this moving talk, Chel O'Reilly describes an unusual gift and its powerful impact on her family.

Chel O'Reilly's passions include storytelling, language, people, and connection. A natural organizer, she loves to arrange words and bring strangers together to become friends. Her first book, Optimists Write Love Letters, is due out in December. Other projects include a first novel and Not Picture Here, a collaboration with artists and writers to create portraits of the "most beautiful people" as defined by actions rather than physical appearances. Chel helped create one of the first TEDx salon events in the country, advises on TEDx events internationally, and has coached speakers for both the TED main stage and TEDx stages. She is a social media maven, a blogger, an editor, a contributing writer for Hallmark.com and a ghostwriter for many miscellaneous others.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
