--Overall Comments--

Season Five keeps going strong with the first episode from Amy Keating Rogers, “The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone”!  Here we get our first continuation of this season’s overarching story arc, The Cutie Map, with it now calling Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie to the Griffon Kingdom.  It’s great to see this show continue to world build and explore not only new places, but new concepts, while at the same time revisiting old characters.  Here we have the return of Gilda the Griffon, who we haven’t seen since her one appearance in season 1! It’s a great reuse and redemption episode for her, as well as Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie.  While this episode contains no songs due to a strict singing ban in Griffonstone, the BGM is this episode really shines, after taking more of a backseat for the past couple of episodes.  Here we get some amazing new epic music for the Griffon kingdom, as well as reprises of many of this season’s themes which were first heard in the season 5 premiere “The Cutie Map”.  I thought we might hear a few of those motifs repeated in the map episodes this season, and William Anderson did not disappoint.  It’s great to hear this show continue to strive to do it’s best in the music department!  Now, let’s get to the awesome score!

--Track Specific Comments--

This track starts with one of the many reoccurring motifs of MLP.  As Pinkie and Rainbow Dash’s cutie marks glow, signifying that their mission in Griffonstone is complete, we get a little woodwind leitmotif which we heard last in the season 5 premiere “The Cutie Map”.   This was during the track “'Our Work Here is Done’”, and it’s safe to say that much like the “Six Locks, Six Keys” motif in season 4, we’ll be hearing this one whenever they complete a map mission.

As Pinkie gives a short advertisement for Baking Powder, we get a theme which was first used all the way back in the season 3 premiere “The Crystal Empire” in the tack “Searching the Library”.  I’m not sure if we’ve heard this one since then, but that’s quite the pull (and a fitting piece to use)!

The final track and episode ends with a reprise of one of my favorite themes from the show, the “Friendship is the Key” theme first used in the season 4 finale in the track of the same name.  It was used again in the season 5 premiere as the Mane 6 are getting their first glance at the new Cutie Map in the track “The Call of the Cutie”.

It’s great to once again have all of the arc episode this season connected by such fantastic backing music, just like the previous one!
