Northside walkabout honors Sarah Cole, reminds local drivers to watch speed, pedestrians

NORTHSIDE, Ohio (WKRC) - A popular Northside restaurant just celebrated their one-year anniversary, but this milestone was a somber one.

Sarah Cole, the owner of the “Tickle Pickle,” was hit and killed by a car while crossing Hamilton Avenue last month.

Sarah Cole was heading across Hamilton Avenue on September 9th going to get coffee for her employees when she was hit by a car.

She was not in the crosswalk when it happened, but it's the same walk that many others could be seen making.

Lack of crosswalks, visibility of crosswalks and reckless drivers have led community members to talk with the City of Cincinnati about solutions to keep pedestrians and drivers safe on this busy road.

On Wednesday, dozens are planning to take part in a walking event on Hamilton Avenue during rush hour to remind drivers to watch their speed and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

They will also hold signs and walk the streets urging drivers to slow down.

You can see 25 mile-per-hour speed limit signs but it's a law Heller-Jackson says is rarely obeyed or enforced.

"Way too many, bicyclists, pedestrians all sorts,” said James Heller-Jackson of the Northside Community Council. “It's easy to get run down on Hamilton Avenue, you must pay attention because drivers typically don't."

The walkabout is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hoffner Park.

Tickle Pickle grew out of Sarah Cole’s catering company, Sarelli's.

The Northside hamburger joint started as a walk-up window, with so much success the restaurant opened a year ago.
