I have got a contract for a really good bounty. My client was a determined man who do not like questions, he just only told me, he deserved that. 25 mlns of credits was a really good reason to take a job and do not ask 'why'.
My intelligence reported a target is about 650 light years from Earth. It is almost one hour of flight for my Fer de Lance, but job was worth my time. Unfortunatelly i did not know what i need to expect. Maybe exploration ASP or maybe hard fitted Anaconda.... or fast Imperial Clipper, so I had to be prepared for the worst...
After a hour of flying i jumped in far-away system, where there is no God or evil. A one system of Wregoe cluster... and my scanner blinked. There is my target - he refuelling his ship. I do not knew why he is at the edge of the sector, what bad things he doing there.... My scanners told me he is in Cobra MK3. Damn.. a fastest ship in galaxy, much faster than my FDL... however i decided to interdict him from warp speed. Decision had to be fast, because Cobra MK3 have also much better jump range. When he sumbited interdiction i was almost sure he will jump quickly to other system and he will easily flee from my FDL combat range. So I thought that I must be like an axe of executioner. Kill at first slice. After drop to impulse speed i attacked my target...his shields collapsed quickly under fire of my five pulse lasers.
Then i realized it can be a poor explorer with basic sublight thrusters. Why somebody want him dead?
I decided to hold my fire and ask some questions... but he started charging his warp drive. This was last chance to finish the job, i started fire, heavily damaged his ship and give him a last chance to surrender.
I asked him for a good reason to let him free.... but he was with broken front glass with oxygen for a few minutes, maybe half an hour. He was exploring from a two weeks. Maybe it was a lie to make me mercy.. maybe not. This was a lot of time and money.
I decided to let him free. May the fate decide about his destiny. Now he was alone in cold void, with a few breath of oxygene.
I am really curious what bad things this poor explorer do to my client. Maybe this was political assassination or maybe something more personal.
It is very curious. Maybe one day I'll find out than i was his angel of forgiveness or hammer of justice... or i was wrong and i should just kill him.
