Spiritual Sacrifice 

SUMMARY: History and literature is replete with stories of noble sacrifice – recorded in many cultures and folk-lore.  In Judaism, the word ‘sacrifice’,  Korban, assumes a much more spiritual character.  A sacrifice in Temple times elevated the soul to a higher level. Today we achieve the same by honouring our food and pronouncing appropriate blessings and using its energy to better the world through Mitzvot. 

Notes:
Literature abounds with glorious instances of individuals sacrificing themselves for their fellow man. Whether it is Antigone, or Richard Carton in Dicken’s A Tale of two Cities, or Eponine in Les Miserables, sacrifice is considered a noble gesture. 

The Hebrew word for sacrifice is Korban. It derives from an interesting source viz. karov, which means closeness. And the deeper meaning of sacrifice in Jewish teaching is that done correctly in the temple it elevates the soul of the animal or vegetational offering bringing it close to G-d.

We don’t have a Beit Hamikdash, so the way we elevate the object of our sacrifice, the food we eat, is to make appropriate blessings over the food and then use the energy we have borrowed to bring goodness into the world. We leverage the animal’s or vegetation’s soul spark

Respect the animal and vegetation kingdoms.  Their sacrifice elevates the world – if we do it right.
