Sydney: Removal of rainbow road angers gay community

The overnight removal of a rainbow-coloured road crossing by Sydney city authorities has angered the local gay community. The crossing had been painted in rainbow colours to mark the 35th annual gay Mardi Gras celebrations, and has since become a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of the city's tolerance. According to New South Wales Roads Minister Duncan Gay, the extra foot traffic posed a serious road safety risk, as many pedestrians would stop on the crossing to take photographs.
