The Mathematica notebook at http://bit.ly/GEMnb shows how one can derive the Maxwell equations using quaternions for the action, a neat trick to know. Variations on the Maxwell action can introduce SU(2) and SU(3) symmetries needed for the standard model. The symmetric algebra of hypercomplex numbers defines an action, and thus field equations whose solutions are consistent with current tests of gravity.
