The second American to orbit Earth and a member of the Mercury 7 space program has died aged 88. Scott Carpenter made only one spaceflight, taking the Aurora 7 spacecraft on three laps around the planet on May 24, 1962. The flight lasted less than five hours. Carpenter actually spent more time on the ocean floor that he did in outer space.

After a motorbike accident rendered him ineligible to fly, he became an aquanaut as part of the Navy's SEALAB II project, spending three weeks living and working at a depth of 204 feet off the California coast. Carpenter was born in Boulder, Colorado, survived by his wife Patty and a large family. Report by Ashley Fudge.
