Gothatfunk, and everyone else, who wants to talk intelligently about A.I. I suggest checking out the links I have here. As for the question "Is Artificial Intelligence/Consciousness/Sentience possible?" I think the answer is yes and here is why and how. We will also not only be able to create artificial intelligence, we will and even have already in small areas, surpassed human intelligence. Consider Watson, Deep Blue and Eureqa.

Watson:

Deep Blue:

Eureqa:

There are several routes to creating A.I.. One route is called reverse engineering the brain.

This is the route taken by The Blue Brain Project.

Another route is "classical A.I." which is done the old fashioned way companies like Cycorp:

Another related route is robotics:

ASIMOs new artificial intelligence. (ASIMO is learning!)

There is a book by Sherry Turkle called "Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other" that has a different take on the problem of A.I..
