What is likely the final step in this major procrastination project (except maybe to adapt it to GPU acceleration one day....) - tearing! If any spring extends beyond a specified maximum it is flagged as broken, returns no force, and is not drawn. Any detached nodes are drawn so as to provide a debris effect. A lower maximum extension results in a more brittle behaviour. If one desires a plastic deformation before breaking, then the spring equilibrium length could be increased as a function of the extension beyond a certain 'elastic extension range'. In this video, a ball is dropped into the centre of the net and subsequently punches a hole through it. The hole grows as the weight of the material pulls the remaining springs beyond their limit. At the end I manually pick off nodes near the boundaries ;-)) All coded in VB. NET from scratch.
