Over the course of his 17-year career, sharpshooter Dale Ellis made seven appearances in the NBA 3-Point Shootout. His performance during 1996-97's All-Star Weekend was the worst of his career, finishing sixth and failing to advance beyond the first round for just the second time. Ellis' Shootout run peaked in the late 80's as a member of the Seattle SuperSonics when he finished as a runner-up to Larry Bird in 1988 then took home the title for himself in 1989. Ellis was the first NBA player to crack the 1,000 career 3-point barrier. As of 2018, he is now 17th overall in career 3-pointers made. Legler, meanwhile, entered the 1997 competition as its defending champion. Having made zero NBA appearances due to knee injury during the 1996-96 season, Legler was still able to pop up in Cleveland to give the shootout another go. He advanced to the final round before falling to Steve Kerr. Legler's full performance can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nX9Syefiw9U For the record, this was not a head-to-head battle. The top four scores of the first round advanced regardless of whether they were outscored by their counterpart or not.
