Lay poles in a fan shape, approximately one horse stride apart (1m/3ft) at the centre of each pole. Ideally you want your horse to be weight-bearing equally on each limb as he steps over.

If your horse is unbalanced or stiff, he might fall in through the shoulder. Slow him down and use the end of the whip gently on his shoulder, encouraging him to weight-bear equally on all his limbs. It is possible to target specific weak legs through slightly raising the poles on a fan - speak to your vet or physio about this.

Once your horse is comfortable with this exercise in walk - this could take several sessions - try it in trot and change the distances between the poles accordingly. Remember, this will be a harder workout and the smaller the circle , the more difficult for your horse.
