The characters you see are mostly the middle weight class on a Mach Bike and is listed from best to worst on the triple mini turbo strat. 

This is not an easy strategy to do and it takes a lot of time to get this strat done correctly. You have to start your drift close to the pipe and when drifting, you have to soft drift which means to move your stick in a diagonal direction to get the mini turbo out quickly. The challenging part is how you position yourself to get this done correctly. It also makes a difference of which character you use since the characters stats aren't the same. 

There's a video of Handy863 doing this strat. It helps improving the run in this course.
