Farewell To Carlingford is a song written by Tommy Makem, one of my folk heroes and is about in his own words one of the loveliest small towns in Ireland. It is also according to Tommy the oldest dating back to Viking times. Carlingford is also a port to which my walking friend Nina and her husband Dermot and others from Port St Mary sail in their RIBS quite frequently in the summer and has close connections with the Isle of Man, so it gives me great pleasure to fulfil this request from my friend Eddie Cullen (edd1ejc) from Ireland.
Farewell To Carlingford
Tommy Makem
G C G
When I was young and in my prime
C D
And could wander wild and free
C G
There was always a longing in my mind
Em D
To follow the call of the sea
D G C G
So I'll sing farewell to Carlingford
D
And farewell to Greenore
G C G
And I'll think of you both day and night
D C D G
Until I return once more, until I return once more
On all the stormy seven seas
I have sailed before the mast
And every voyage I ever made
I swore it would be my last
And I had a girl called Mary Doyle
And she lived in Greenore
And the foremost thought in my mind
Was to keep me safe onshore
A landsman's life is all his own
He can go or he can stay
But when the sea gets in your blood
When she calls you must obey
