The Yamal Peninsula deep in the Arctic is home to the world's richest natural gas reserves. But it's one of the most difficult fields to tap because of geography and climactic conditions. In recent years, the Yamal Project became the first major energy ooperation project in Russia under the Belt and Road Initiative, driven by the development of a Silk Road on the ice between China and Russia. Production went into operation in 2017, with two ships carrying gas already returning to China. The project not only develops Russian energy industry and frontier areas, but also accelerates optimization of China's energy structure.
