November 29th, 2013 - "Orange that knows no colour: How family farmers and immigrants in Calabria are rebuilding a vibrant rural economy after the xenophobic violence of 2010" is the title of a seminar organized at FAO Headquarters in Rome. Rosarno is an agricultural area well known in Italy for the terrible violence that erupted in between locals and African immigrant workers over the disastrous working conditions. In response to the violence and tension, a number of people in the area came together and formed SOS Rosarno (http://sosrosarno.org/) to try and rebuild a society that respects human dignity and family farming. SOS Rosarno assists willing local farmers to make decent contracts with labourers, and then assists in directly marketing their produce to the public. This association frames its mission within a wider role of not just supporting family farmers, but rebuilding a healthy and vibrant rural economy in a society that has been impoverished by exploitation, racism and the hold of the mafia. © FAO: http://www.fao.org
