Richard Lloyd Anderson, an LDS scholar and author of the book "Investigating The Book of Mormon Witnesses", discusses the reliability of the witnesses.
The witnesses to The Book of Mormon are a great evidence to the book. These men testified that they saw the gold plates, some by an angel, their whole lives despite persecution. Some were even excommunicated from the Church and still never denied what they saw. These men had nothing to lose, and everything to gain by denying what they saw, but they never did because they truly saw an angel and the gold plates.
