The Ninja Gaiden series originally started in the form of the arcade beat 'em up by Tecmo, also known as Shadow Warriors. A series of 8-bit NES games catapulted the series to popularity, with additional entries to the series appearing on Sega's Master System and Game Gear platforms.

The story involves a evil mastermind attempting to steal the Dragon Sword from ninja, Ryu Hayabusa, in a plot to bring about global annihilation. The player embarks on a mission to discover the identity of evil mastermind and to put a stop to his plans.

The story is presented in a series of cut-scenes which, for the time, was uncommon. Games rarely made an effort to tell much in the way of stories at this time, but I remember that the presentation made the game quite engaging.

The game is fairly straightforward platforming. Combat involves slashing opponents with your sword, or using various projectile attacks that can be collected within each level. The projectile attacks require energy to perform (AKA force) and is a limited resource. Additional Force can be collected by splitting open the various spherical containers found within each level.

Even today, many things about the game and it's artwork strike me as odd. The main sprite looks like he's wearing pyjamas (or a nice blue onesie given the current fashion climate) and also looks like he has a huge bum.

Upon defeating Mr. Tsin in level three, it appears that his response to death is to expel a considerable amount of gas from his rear; this is something that still amuses me greatly!

The game doesn't last particularly long and, once complete, there is little reason to revisit the game.

Ninja Gaiden isn't a bad game, but it just feels like a fairly by-the-numbers side-scroller with little else to praise it for other than the attempt at cinematic storytelling.
