The championship is run by ConIFA (Confederation of Independent Football Associations), which represents national sides unable to join FIFA. Teams from 12 unrecognized countries took part in the tournament (Abkhazia, Chagos Islands, Kurdistan, Northern Cyprus, Padania, Panjab, Raetia, Sapmi, Somaliland, Székely Land, United Koreans in Japan, Western Armenia).

Matches were played in Sukhum, the capital and the largest city of the unrecognized Republic and Gagra, a town at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains

As a result of the World Football Cup 2016, Abkhazia won the championship. Punjab and Northern Cyprus took the second and the third places respectively.

Abkhazia is currently recognized by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru. The Georgian government, the United Nations and the majority of the world's governments consider Abkhazia part of Georgia, although Georgia has no control over it. Nowadays, about 241 thousand people live in Abkhazia. Nearly half of them are ethnic Abkhazians. There are two official languages: Abkhaz and Russian. The state is also situated at the Black Sea. So, there is a warm subtropical climate and it is a popular destination for Russian tourists.
