Greetings! A look at what we have been doing in our yard and garden this weekend. Busy, busy, busy! We were fortunate enough to be able to go the the annual plant sale at the Historic Tryon Palace, here in New Bern and we got a really great thornless blackberry bush that has a ton of blossoms on it. Rick has built me a new box for it to put next to the deck steps. It should fill out nicely over time and we will have a number of blackberry bushes to fill in that void. We also cleaned out several of the garden boxes and planted tomatoes. We planted all heirloom varieties that were grown by the Tryon Palace gardening team. Everything at the palace is accurate to colonial times and everything in their gardens is heirloom and in some cases has been their for many years. We have planted Cherokee Purple, Roma, Brandywine and Heirloom Grape Tomaotes. We have also planted Heirloom varieties of crookneck squash and zucchini as well as jalapeno, king arthur bell peppers and giant marconi peppers. I was lucky to find my local grocery store clearing out some Kole crop plants and got 8 for 50 cents a piece. I got broccoli, cabbage and califlower. I know that it is getting a bit warm for these, but I am hopeful that if I tend them properly they will reward me in the autumn. I plan on planting only one variety of cucumber this year and am grappling with a choice between a slicing cucumber or my every favorite pearl, which is a white Asian cuke. But I will have to decide soon because I need to get them into the ground. I also plan on planting Kentucy Wonder Pole beans, giant chilies, Cayenne peppers, and more as I think of it. I also have plans to increase my selection of medicinal herbs and was fortunate enough to get two comfrey plants that I have put in the ground and am very excited to have because of its very important healing properties with regard to bone and muscle healing as well as what it can do for the garden itself when made into a tea. Along with the comfrey I plan on putting in chamomile, mugwort, St. John's Wort, Marshmallow, Wormwood and Sorrel to go along with the Bee Balm, Lemon Balm, Sage, Thyme, Burnett, Fennel, Spearmint, Catnip, lavender, bay laurel and Echanacia that I already have established. I got a bunch of really great herb seeds for my medicial garden from Baker Creek Seeds. They have the best variety of non GMO seeds in the country and they are pure of both product and heart. They are a family owned business that is passionate about promoting gardening and organic living. You can find them at the following link: http://www.rareseeds.com I hope that you have enjoyed this walkthrough. I am hoping to try and get one out each week so you can see the progress. I also have plans to share with you how I plant tomatoes, how I fertilize and all of my preferred garden helpers. I hope this encourages you to plant something you can eat. Remember, you don't have to have a farm or a big yard, you just have to have a pot with some soil, some good seeds and a desire to grow something for dinner. Happy Gardening!
