The Australian Minimum Wage is something we can all be proud of. It's a living wage and not every country has that. But people on minimum Award wages are slipping further and further behind the rest of the workforce. If this gap keeps growing, we will end up with an American-style 'working poor' struggling to meet the costs of food, accommodation, travel, health and education. Australian unions have always fought for a fair and decent Minimum Wage because that's a sign of the kind of country we aspire to be. Now is the time to increase the minimum wage by $30 per week to $636.40. Our economy is strong and we can afford it.
