My name is Donna Barhorst. I'm a pediatrician at Northern Utah Pediatrics. I decided to go into medicine because I really enjoyed science and biology, and I wanted to do something that I could interact with patients or people when I did it. Initially I was going to be a lab tech, but then I decided I really wanted more one on one daily interaction with people. No one in my family had ever been in medicine so it was sort of a new idea to do that. So I just never had been around physicians or nurses or anything. So it kind of was a leap of trying something totally different. I decided to go into pediatrics because I really enjoy taking care of families, parents and their children. And all my experience prior to residency had to do with doing jobs that had kids - basically camp counselor, or life guard, or those things. I'm one of 6, so always I grew up with lots of people around and lots of chaos, so the noisiness of children doesn't bother me at all. I like that, but then I also like the urgent care, I like taking care of sick children. Part of it is just having been on a reservation, we had a lot of very critically ill kids, doing some ER time, so it's being able to do something and have a good result, have a good outcome. That's the nice thing about our practice is we still do that with our kids care, and we still take care of our in-patient patients. So we have our kids that are more ill. And it keeps you thinking, keeps you more challenged, keeps you learning. So that's why I like that.
