Certainly one of the images most associated with China would be the enormous crowds that flood the streets of cities and tourists sites throughout the country. During certain times of the year these crowds, or “人山人海 (rénshānrénhǎi)" are particularly noticeable.
Perhaps there is no other time of the year to see this enormous sea of people than China's "Golden Week", a weeklong vacation following the National Day on October 1.

During this time, nearly 600 million tourists spend over 70 billion USD traveling to various tourist attractions and locations throughout the country (and increasingly abroad). During this week, “人山人海 (rénshānrénhǎi)" are a common site in China. It's unlikely you can take a selfie in an iconic location without including more than a few other tourists, or maybe hundreds!

人山人海 (rénshānrénhǎi): huge crowds of people; a sea of people; a mountain of people.

人 (rén): means people
山 (shān): means mountain
海 (hǎi): means sea
