The Terrapin Island is a "trailing suction hopper dredge," a kind of combination vacuum cleaner/dump truck, and one of the largest of its kind in the world. In July 2015, The Pilot visited the Terrapin Island in Chesapeake Bay, where it was working a 12-mile stretch of what's known as York Spit Channel, a 50-foot-plus-deep marine interstate (of sorts) leading to and from Baltimore.
