This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. When his school district cut 5th Grade Band for budgetary reasons, Jamie McGrath thought it was tragic. So, he built his own version of the program.

Jamie McGrath is a teacher and gifted specialist at Gould Elementary School in Savannah, Georgia. He is the author of poetry, plays, fiction and, most recently, a handbook for new teachers titled "Before You Teach." He is father to three brilliant children and a dachshund that has chewed up four pairs of shoes, nine dolls, and much of the living room carpet. He spoke at TEDxCC in 2012 on design projects in education, and in Napa, California last year on building moral character through project-based learning.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
