Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, begins tonight 9/27 and lasts until tomorrow night, 9/28.  This is a day the Bible commands all humans to afflict their souls and to rest.  This is a High Sabbath.  This was the only day on which the High Priest was allowed to go into the Most Holy Place.  Two goats would be offered on this day.  The scape goat would be released alive into the wilderness.  The other goat would be slaughtered and its blood brought in to the Most Holy Place where the High Priest would splash the blood on the Ark of the Covenant.  

This most holy High Sabbath foreshadows the Great White Throne Judgment in which all humanity, sinners and saints, who were not resurrected in the 1st resurrection (Yom Teruach) will be gathered before YHVH's Throne and either cast into Everlasting Fire or received into paradise.  

The Day of Atonement foreshadows the day on which a final atonement for sin is made and all sin is forever purged from the universe.
